Understanding Volleyball Tracks in the Greater Salt Lake City Area
One question we get from families new to club volleyball is: what's actually the difference between all these volleyball programs? Recreational programs, local clubs, regional clubs, national clubs; the terms get thrown around a lot, and the commitment (and cost) behind each one can vary enormously. We wanted to lay out a general picture of the landscape here in the Salt Lake City area, partly to help you understand your options, and partly to be transparent about where Park City Juniors fits today.
Broadly, programs in our area fall into four tiers. They're not official categories, but they're a useful way to think about the tradeoffs between commitment, cost, and competition level.
Recreational
Recreational programs are the most accessible entry point into the sport. Practices and games happen locally, often through in-house leagues or short clinics: think Basin Recreation's volleyball clinics or our own Foundations program here in Park City. There are no tryouts, no travel, minimal season-long commitment, and the focus is on introducing fundamentals and having fun.
Cost is correspondingly low: a 4-week, 8-hour recreational session might run around $80-$200, or roughly the $18-$25/hour range, depending on coach to player ratios, coaching experience and expertise and size of the clinic. This is a great starting point for younger or newer athletes, players who are curious about volleyball but also play other sports, or for families who want to try the sport before committing to something bigger.
Local
Local programs practice locally, much like recreational programs, but they have some element of placement/tryout for the team, which is followed by a small roster selection. These teams travel within the region for tournaments, typically across the Wasatch Front (Salt Lake City, Provo, Lehi, Ogden, and similar drives). It's a meaningful step up in commitment: regular practices, a real season, and one or two-day tournaments, but without the extensive travel or cost of higher-level programs.
This is intentionally where we've built our current PCJ program. We think it's the right level for a club our age, in our community, competing against similarly-local competition. That said, if we find our teams consistently performing well against other Wasatch Front programs, we'd absolutely consider stepping into regional tournament play down the road. For now, local competition lets us focus on development and keep the season accessible for local families.
Regional
Regional clubs raise the stakes considerably. These clubs often own or have priority access to large facilities that serve as the club’s home base facility for practices and sometimes tournaments. Athletes practice at the club’s home facility, but tournament travel extends well beyond the local area — for SLC-based regional teams, that might mean tournaments in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Boise, and Seattle. This tier typically draws more experienced, more competitive athletes who are looking to be seen by college recruiters and to test themselves against a broader pool of talent.
With that increased competition comes increased cost and time commitment: more practices, more weekends away from home, and travel expenses on top of standard club fees.
National
National-level clubs represent the top of the club volleyball pyramid. These teams are typically built from the best players across a 30-to-50-mile radius, pulling standout athletes from dozens of high schools into a single, highly competitive roster. National teams play in both regional and national tournaments throughout the season, usually with an explicit goal: qualifying for an end-of-season national championship tournament.
This is the most demanding tier by every measure of time, travel, and cost. Between club fees, tournament fees, flights, and hotels, a season at the national level can run upwards of $10,000 per athlete.
The Sliding Scale
Put together, the four tiers form a pretty clear sliding scale, both in commitment and in cost — from an $80, 4-week recreational session at Basin Recreation all the way up to $10,000+ national-level seasons with cross-country travel. Neither end of that scale is "right" or "wrong"; it really depends on your athlete's goals, your family's schedule, and what you're looking to get out of the season.
Where Does This Leave You/Your Athlete?
If your athlete is just starting out, or you're looking for a low-commitment way to build skills and love for the game, recreational clinics are a great fit. If they are ready for a real competitive season with local travel and a genuine team environment, that's exactly what we've built at Park City Juniors. And if they are already playing at a high level and looking for regional or national exposure, it's worth knowing those options exist in our area too, even if they're not where we currently compete.
Wherever your family lands, we're always happy to talk through what makes sense for your athlete.
